Creating a Sustainable World through Communities

We live in a day and age where the technology exists to create a sustainable world that meets the challenges of tomorrow with solutions we can apply today. Why should we do this? Here are some staggering statistics:

• More than 100 million people are homeless worldwide (2005 UN Commission on Human Rights)
• An estimated 15 million children die annually of starvation (World Health Organization)
• 884 million people lack access to safe water supplies (approximately 1 in 8!) and 3.6 million die each year from water-related diseases (World Health Organization 2008)
• More than 80% of sewage in developing countries is discharged untreated, polluting rivers, lakes, and costal areas (2004-Wastewater use in Irrigated Agriculture) and “the majority of illness in the world is caused by fecal matter” (Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council – 2008)
• Not since 1973 has energy use increases as much, in percentage terms!, as it did in 2010 (Economist – 6/2011) yet 1.6 billion people (a quarter of humanity) live without electricity (Millennium Development Goals Report 2007)

Statistics like this beg the question: If we have the technology to solve these problems, why haven’t we? The most common answer to this question is that it is either too expensive or not profitable enough, and while there are many organizations purposed to address the specific issues, the fact remains that most organizations are providing resources not training and the vast majority of people who feel a moral imperative to do something about this don’t have any avenue to do so.

The solution is building sustainable communities; and more specifically a sustainable communities strategy for world change through achieving the following….
