One Community Welcomes Vicente Subiela to the Engineering Team!

One Community welcomes Vicente Subiela to the Engineering Team as our newest Volunteer/Consultant!

Vicente became an engineer in 1993 (University of Zaragoza, Spain), and then was researching CO2 balances and energy & economic balances in life cycle analysis within the R&D center CIRCE. He started as project manager in the Canary Islands Institute of Technology in 1997, where he was involved in off-grid autonomous-renewable-energy-driven desalination projects (electric and thermal processes) and other sustainability activities until 2014, when he retired after a larynx cancer. Four years later, he completed his PhD on technical & economic optimization of solar & wind powered reverse osmosis systems. He has more than 20 publications. Vicente has been active since 2014 by attending courses in photography, graphic design and coaching. He balances his activities with hiking, meditation, cooking, dancing, and family life (3 kids). He is also an active member in a gender equality men’s association, and hosts conferences to share his experience and life learning during and after his cancer. As a One Community volunteer, Vicente is leading the solar design and research team.

This week the core team continued with the transformation of the tables into images for the new “Earth-Dome Loft Structural Engineering and Calculations” page. We edited more images, placed the latest previously created images from the calculation tables on the site, researched some technical terminology and construction details to make it easier for future readers to understand, found some videos that explained these concepts, and made a few more corrections to the template tables from last week. The core team also continued edits on the Earthbag Village Footer, Foundation and Flooring development Doc. This week we focused on Section 7 of the Footer, Foundation and Flooring doc: Horizontal Wing Insulation. This included Required Usage Parameters based on the AFI (Air Freezing Index), Finish Grade, Extension Length, Materials, and Shallow Foundation Consideration. Associated links were reviewed, additional research on portions of the section, edits completed, and a list of questions compiled for further elaboration of the chapters within the section for clarifications to novice builders. Dean Scholz (Architectural Designer) continued helping with the Earthbag Village (Pod 1) 4-dome cluster designs. This week was week #216 of Dean’s work and the focus was creating and testing the guest room furniture textures. Pictures of some of this work are below.

Jose Luis Flores (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 34th week helping finish the Net-zero Bathroom component of the Earthbag Village. This week Jose Luis completed updating the Net-Zero Bathroom tutorial/instructions by adding user recommendations, adding renderings and video recommendations. He calculated and added the calculated estimate to the heating element section of the tutorial/instructions and briefly explained how the elements prevent pipes from freezing. Additional insulation costs were added to the cost analysis and the power consumed, along with running costs, of the heating elements were added to the power budget of the cost analysis. Jig saw blades were researched to determine an appropriate blade to cut through thin sheet metal with good maneuverability and durability. The selected blade was added to the materials/tools introduction of the tutorial/instructions. He began reviewing and updating the rainwater collection and use calculations to determine if the calculations are correct and whether the roof size is sufficient to self-sustain its water supply. Stacey Maillet (Graphic Designer) completed her 32nd week working on the final edits and revisions to the Murphy bed instructions. This week Stacey finished the cutting pages and created a PDF with all the sections. Next step is to have this checked in 3D for accuracy. We’ve tried our best to do all math correctly but there may have been some unrealistic layout or maybe too many pieces are too close together. Checking in 3D will finalize it all. Hannah Copeman (Structural Engineer) completed her 29th week helping complete all the Earthbag Village tutorials. This week Hannah continued the development of the Earthbag Village dome construction by continuing work on the Footer, Foundation and Flooring tutorial. She continued to discuss the content with other team members and edited the tutorial to reflect updated design changes. She did so by altering the size of the sheets for the horizontal wing insulation, researching alternative options for mineral wool adhesive tapes, researching non-toxic insulation options to fill gaps around the dome perimeter and updating the detailed description of how to place the insulative layers around the dome. You can see some pictures of this work below.

Mark Wambua (Civil Engineer) completed his 10th week working on the Parking Lot and Sustainable Roadways, Walkways, and Landscaping guides. This week Mark worked on creating a section view of the basement floor grading plan. Additionally, he created a grading plan for the first floor, did cut area calculations on the basement floor, converted bullet points on “how to compile a pavement recommendation” into a paragraph format, and worked on creating blocks for erosion control on AutoCAD. Zhiheng “Samson” Su (Civil Engineer) also completed his 10th week on the team and woking on the Parking Lot and Sustainable Roadways, Walkways, and Landscaping guides. This week, Samson had a weekly meeting with David discussing the additional detail and calculation of the basement drainage plan and the ground floor drainage plan. He did some calculation of the elevation of the pump and the pipes’ transition and added some additional detail required by David to the basement drainage plan drawing. He also finished the ground floor drainage plan. See pictures below showing some of this work.

Vicente J Subiela (Project Management Adviser) completed his 9th week working on the solar microgrid design, sizing, and cost analysis specifics. This week Vicente researched different sources of data for the electricity demand in our location to have a reference of hourly demand. He also continued the support to Luis and Jason on their respective activities and reviewed the solar sizing tool (XLS file) to update the “readme” (First tab) so that the different tabs are easier to be understood and used. He then started to create preliminary graphical monthly energy balances to identify the gaps between energy production and demand and redid the simulations and tests with the SAM software. Aidan Geissler (Sustainability Researcher) completed his 6th week helping with 2nd-to-final review, feedback, and content editing. This week Aidan primarily worked on the Plastic Recycling content, by researching and writing about strategies for recycling, reusing, and repurposing plastic. So far, this research has included ways to reduce plastic consumption, options for reusable and sustainable alternatives, innovations of bioplastics and biodegradable plastics, and several creative DIY projects for repurposing plastic (such as planters and bird feeders). Jeson Hu (Mechanical Engineer Assistant) completed his 3rd week helping with research related to the solar microgrid design, sizing, and cost analysis specifics. This week Jeson researched on the solar hardwares from different companies on the market. He found that no company provides the pricing for their solar hardwares and he wrote emails to ask for a quote. In addition, he found a few companies which showed great credibility through their past work, and he attached their webpage link to the company names on the google sheet. Also, most companies do not show the specs for their hardware. He plans to email those companies for a quote and hardware specs. Furthermore, he found more solar technology on the market that shows great efficiency and lifetime. He also found the most recent cost estimation from an accredited research lab. Ian Oliver Malinay (Energy Modeler/Analyst) completed his 13th week helping run the energy analysis calculations to help us achieve LEED Platinum status for the Duplicable City Center. This week, Ian revised the cupola roof and cupola ceiling of Duplicable City Center for LEED Platinum Certification. The R-value is more efficient than ASHRAE Baseline. He checked the required inputs to facilitate the cooling and heating loads based on the available information developed by the team, and checked and updated the fenestration spreadsheet summary. Additionally, he assessed the LPD of the Building, requested additional inputs, and processed/revised the proper naming/tagging of materials in DesignBuilder for easy reference. He also changed the infiltration rate of each thermal zone as required by ASHRAE std, processed the lighting power density of each zone or spaces in the model, and updated the infiltration rate of the building. Revised the Cupola Roof and Cupola Ceiling of Duplicable City Center for LEED Platinum Certification – Click for Page

David Na (Project Management Adviser/Engineer) completed his 6th week helping with input and management of the Parking Lot and Sustainable Roadways, Walkways, and Landscaping tutorial development, as well as the City Center Water Catchment Designs. David began the week by holding a meeting with his team. He answered questions regarding the AutoCAD design and assigned more design action items to his team for the week. Because his team is preoccupied with design duties, David took on the technical writing and report responsibilities for his team this week. David has completed the review and changes for the pavement design tutorial and has reformatted it in a way to improve readability and comprehension for the general public. David is also in the process of completing an excel template for grading calculations. Lastly, he has made changes to the design for the City Center by changing the driveway into the basement into a stairway due to the sloping for the driveway making it way too long. Saffet Kilçer (Structural Engineer) completed his 4th week working on the Duplicable City Center beam and column designs using SAP2000. This week he identified and fixed a problem in the model (from the period values T= 822466.455) where some points in the model were faulty. Faulty beams were identified, the problems were resolved, and the period values returned to normal. Live load was added and activated in the model. Pictures below are related to this.

This week Sunitha did the load calculation for LVL beams and new angle brackets. More simulations are needed and she will work on this and a longer bracket size in the coming week. Worked on the Load Calculation for LVI Beams and New Angle Brackets – Click for Duplicable City Center

Luis Manuel Dominguez (Research Engineer) also completed his 3rd week helping with research related to the solar microgrid design, sizing, and cost analysis specifics. This week Luis continued his work on the City Center eco hot tub design. This week he focused on solving the hot tubs heat transfer analysis. After completing his Energy 2D simulation of the hot tub, Luis had some guideline numbers to reference. He then moved on to studying the combined heat transfer caused by convection and evaporation. He was able to gather all of the variables necessary to calculate the surface temperature and heat flux of the system. These values will allow Luis to continue and find the evaporative heat loss, giving him the two most important values when looking at the energy transfer. Next week he’ll be wrapping up his analytical calculations of the hot tub when in use, and will begin analyzing the hot tub when covered and idle, along with the energy usage when starting up the system. Minseok (Evan) Kim (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 2nd week leading the final design process for the City Center open source HVAC designs. This week Evan coordinated with Ian on the roof insulation for the second floor, prepared a preliminary equipment schedule, air device selection, and kitchen ventilation calculations. This week the core team continued working on the Herbal Garden design for behind the Duplicable City Center. This week’s work was concentrated on designing deer protective fences that consist of double fences 4’ apart. We built an 8-foot tall pole/double-rope fence on the inside perimeter of the garden. Between the poles on the lower rope we hung wind activated homemade decorations. We also updated the right leaf garden bed to a 3D model and placed an extra bench with a storage compartment under the seat near the South entrance. Pictures below are related to this work.

We’ll report on the final two elements to be finished as we develop them.

With over 8 years of work invested in the process, the sections below are all complete until we move onto the property and continue the development and open sourcing process with teachers and students – a development process that is built directly into the structure of the education program and everything else we’re creating too:

This week the core team completed 34 hours managing One Community emails, social media accounts, interviewing potential new volunteer team members, and managing volunteer-work review and collaboration not mentioned elsewhere here.

The core team additionally completed our 14th week working on improving the content for all our Values Pages. This week we edited the value of Community Contribution, both the website and mind map. The mind map is evolving to have a more organized appearance. The website text has improved flow, less passive voice, less long sentences, and added content. Formatting has also been updated, bullet-style changed, anchors moved to correct location, etc. Pictures of some of this work are below.

He also approved one PR where everything seems to work normally. There is a bug when users try to update classification for a task, but it does not fall under the PR branch. This week the core team continued with the transformation of the tables into images for the Earthbag Village “Earth-Dome Loft Structural Engineering and Calculations“ page. We added most of them to the website and also did some research on how to improve this process by editing images in batches with the Gimp Open Source Editor. Then we started a new spreadsheet to contain all the different table templates options, so that future researchers can use them to create beautiful tables from the start. The core team also continued edits on the Earthbag Village Footer, Foundation and Flooring development Doc. This week we provided edits and comments for sections 6.3 Install Thermal Insulation, 6.6 Pour Concrete, Screed, and Set Control Joints, 6.7 Broom Finish, Cure, and Seal, and 6.8. Metal Sheet Flashing. We also reviewed discarded info for these sections to salvage appropriate and useful info for final narrative. See pictures below for some screenshots related to this.

Jose Luis Flores (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 33rd week helping finish the Net-zero Bathroom component of the Earthbag Village. This week Jose Luis updated the Net-Zero Bathroom tutorial/instructions by adding user friendly formatting, additional diagrams, and additional steps to various sections. The formatting included a clear and concise introduction to sections followed by a picture of the end result along with a space for a future instructional video. The sections were updated by adding more labels to diagrams and breaking steps down into smaller substeps for more clarity. Steps were added to the roof access flash section that included connecting and securing the interior roof panels of the roof access. He also reformatted the section covering the final fastener installation of the interior roof. The format broke down the steps from being paragraphs long to a few sentences clarifying the process further. Once the final updates are complete, new sections to the Net-Zero Bathroom tutorial/instructions can be integrated. The pictures below show some of this work.

Stacey Maillet (Graphic Designer) completed her 31st week working on the final edits and revisions to the Murphy bed instructions. This week Stacey started laying out the wood pieces for wood cutting sections of the instructions. As mentioned in notes, some of the pieces are longer than 96” and therefore longer than the 8 foot long boards they are cut from. We need to double check each of these pieces are correct. If they are, these pieces will need to be cut into 2 pieces and all assemblies need to be updated to match. Considering these larger pieces are used for bed panels and wall panels that might hold considerable weight, we want to plan as best we can for where the boards should be cut. Maybe a few extra inches give or take will make a difference as to constructing the now 2pc boards on to the frame and wall section without risking stress or breakage of boards. Hannah Copeman (Structural Engineer) completed her 28th week helping complete all the Earthbag Village tutorials. This week Hannah continued the development of the Earthbag Village dome construction by continuing work on the Footer, Foundation and Flooring tutorial. She finished the final section of the document – Section 7 (Horizontal Wing Insulation) – for initial review, eliminated out-of-date content, and edited document drawings to reflect the current design. Hannah also added additional images to aid in the description of installing the vapor barrier and thermal insulation around the domes. You can see some pictures of this work below.

This week, Samson had a weekly meeting with David discussing the basement floor plan and the drainage plan. His work focused on drawing the top view of the basement drainage plan in AutoCad and calculating the different parts’ elevation of the drainage plan. Vicente J Subiela (Project Management Adviser) completed his 8th week working on the solar microgrid design, sizing, and cost analysis specifics. Vicente had multiple contacts with new members of the team to discuss technical and organizational matters, namely in the hot tub design and in the selection of PV panels. He tested a 2D modeling option to find out the energy demand from the tub and made suggestions to Luis to assume this task. He also helped Jeson to find information about PV prices in USA and discussed with Jae about the accuracy in the calculation of the total energy demand and how to face it. This week Aidan wrapped up the Styrofoam Recycling webpage by finishing additional research, designing a graphic, and adding written content in order to provide information about measuring effectiveness of using DIY Polystyrene projects for insulation. He also completed creating tutorials and comparison tables for methods of Glass Recycling DIY Glass Kilns and Glass Crushers. Aidan also reviewed the current Murphy bed assembly instruction, where he provided suggestions to improve the readability and appearance. Lastly, Aidan began revising the current Plastic Recycling content.

Jeson Hu (Mechanical Engineer Assistant) completed his 2nd week helping with research related to the solar microgrid design, sizing, and cost analysis specifics. This week Jeson progressed on the research of solar hardware. He started by researching available types of solar panels, and listed their advantages and disadvantages. Considering this research would be used for future village design, he listed a few promising solar panel techs that are still under development or not fully matured also. These technologies are showing great potential, and needed to be considered for the future village design. In addition, he researched the available solar panels on the market for their specs including power, max voltage, max current, location, and warranty. Ian Oliver Malinay (Energy Modeler/Analyst) completed his 12th week helping run the energy analysis calculations to help us achieve LEED Platinum status for the Duplicable City Center. This week, Ian finalized/double checked the required material for Duplicable City Center. He also coordinated the Energy Modeling with the volunteer who joined to help finish the HVAC details. During their coordination meeting they agreed to revise the present HVAC details with the help of cooling and heating load calc from DesignBuilder Software. Ian provided suggestions for the material that will be useful to reduce the energy consumption of the building. This material / insulation can be installed to external walls, roofs, ceiling and floorings. He also updated the shading of the energy model and changed the material title for a better presentation and to distinguish the material more easily on the render. David Na (Project Management Adviser/Engineer)  completed his 5th week helping with input and management of the Parking Lot and Sustainable Roadways, Walkways, and Landscaping tutorial development, as well as the City Center Water Catchment Designs. David held a meeting on Monday to set action items for the week for his team. He assigned his preliminary drainage design sketches to Mark and Samson to design using AutoCAD software. Additionally, he has sketched up the roof drainage plan, ground floor drainage plan, and a section view. He is also currently working on an erosion control plan for the City Center project. Along with this, David made some changes and incorporated Aidan’s comments to make the pavement design tutorial literature and breakdown easier to understand for the public. Lastly, he is preparing an excel file for grading calculations so that Mark can utilize and incorporate it into the plans. Pictures below are related to this work.

Sunitha Paraselli (Mechanical Design Engineer) completed her 2nd week working on the Duplicable City Center connectors we’ll use to build the domes. This week Sunitha designed an angle bracket with 2x2x3 and 2x2x4 galvanized steel, which is readily available for $0.98 and provided the link for procurement details. The nice thing about this material is, if you are bending, the bending radius can be 2.5 times the material thickness. The analysis details were provided in the google doc. Comparing with previous analysis results, a 2x2x3 angle bracket is cost effective, efficient and can withstand more load with high yield strength when compared to 2x2x4 angle bracket. Luis Manuel Dominguez (Research Engineer) also completed his 2nd week helping with research related to the solar microgrid design, sizing, and cost analysis specifics. This week Luis continued his work on the City Center eco hot tub design. He focused on simulating the heat transfer that occurs in the hot tub while in use. To start, some primary calculations were done using MATLAB to get an understanding of the problem, and all the knowns and unknowns. Through this code, he will be able to determine the overall heat flux throughout the system after a few modifications. Luis took another approach to the problem by modeling it in Energy2D, a heat transfer and fluid simulation software. Energy2D allows the heat transfer over time to be analyzed. Both simulations made great progress this week and he looks forward to presenting his findings in the coming weeks. The pictures below share some of this developing work.

Minseok (Evan) Kim (Mechanical Engineer) joined the team and completed his first week leading the final design process for the City Center open source HVAC designs. Evan calculated the space ventilation airflow per ASHRAE 62.1 2019. He re-evaluated the floor areas and found some of the room floor areas in the analysis were wrong and/or missing. The Kitchen Cooking area, Back-Of-House kitchen and Dining Hall 1 zones are separated as they all have different loads. He excluded Cooler & Freezer areas from the floor area and separated basement area from the boiler room. He also excluded Cooler & Freezer areas from the floor area. He added ventilation calculations for the Hallway 1 & 2. He corrected the library floor area and included the Cupola Room (assumed to be Health Club category) in the ventilation calculations as well. He provided restroom exhaust rate calculations. He referred to the zone occupancy table in the CAD file for the number of occupants. Evan also had two one-hour Zoom meetings with Jae to review the current HVAC design and plumbing system design and created a list of action items for upcoming volunteers Mohammad and Cindy. Evan also coordinated with Ian to review HVAC ventilation data for energy load calculations and reviewed and provided comments on the current plumbing drawings and HVAC system design outline narrative for all three domes. We used Google to create these images. These images were created to support the individual core value pages and have a graphic summary of the textual content on the website.

Wen Zhang (Software Engineer) completed her 41st week as a volunteer working on the Highest Good Network software. This week Wen wrapped up more items left on the badge display. First, the badge report component (pop up when clicking the “Badge Report” button) was updated to show the real data, and a checkbox was added to the last column. Second, the front end counters for the total badges earned by the user and displays in the badge section on the dashboard (previously the number of badges earned was a static number). Now a user may earn a badge several times and their count will reflect this. Third, the badge section filters the timestamp of each badge earned and shows the newly earned badges separately. She is now working on the CSS of the badge counter to display the number in a small circle with each badge image. Pictures below are related to this work.

This week Nithesh and the TEK Talent team completed the remaining Rest API changes to clear the random password once used. Once they logged in using the temporary password it will redirect to the “change password” screen and the user can reset their password from there. Noor Qureshi (Insurance Researcher) completed her 29th week helping research One Community’s insurance options. This week Noor researched how a dire medical emergency will be covered by the plan she had chosen for this organization. She researched the various costs associated with cardiovascular and created an example breakdown of what the costs would look with and without coverage. She analyzed how these types of costs can be prevented in the first place. She worked on explaining how to read the spreadsheet that ranked the insurance plans, and what it was trying to show. She also gave a breakdown about how diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer can be avoided in order to avoid having such high medical expenses. Pictures below show some of this work.

She tried various ways to pull tasks data from the API but was not able to. After debugging, she noticed there is an error in the API itself. Currently she is blocked by this API bug for the project reporting page. She has requested access to the database to try to debug more for this issue later. Vignesh Chandrasekharan (Software Developer) also joined the team and completed his 1st week as a volunteer working on the Highest Good Network software. This week Vignesh worked on setting up the React HGN app and worked on WBS #: 4.3. He finished implementing the popup that displays instructions on how to work with a WBS. He also changed the classification input text field into a dropdown that contains the 8 choices given here. Vignesh also included edit buttons near the task numbers displayed in the projects tab so that it is easy for the user to edit tasks. Finally, he worked on fixing some eslint issues that originated from the react project setup process. Pictures of some of this work are below.

And the core team conducted edits on the Earthbag Village Footer, Foundation and Flooring development Doc sections 5.4, 5.5, 6.4, 6.5, 6.6, and 6.7. This included the exterior waterproofing membrane, vertical interior insulation, vapor barrier installation, welded wire fabric placement, pouring and screeding of concrete, setting of control joints, and broom finish, cure and seal. Dean Scholz (Architectural Designer) continued helping with the Earthbag Village (Pod 1) 4-dome cluster designs. This week was week #215 of Dean’s work and the focus was creating and testing the kitchen table texture, fixing broken dome textures, and importing SketchUp models into 3DS Max for texturing.

Jose Luis Flores (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 32nd week helping finish the Net-zero Bathroom component of the Earthbag Village. This week Jose Luis completed the rough draft of the Insulation and Heating Element sections of the Net-Zero Bathroom tutorial/instructions. In the instructions he included the steps required to construct the necessary structures to help further insulate the rainwater storage room of the Net-Zero Bathroom. The steps were written out clearly and included details on the reasoning behind the process to help the user determine whether it is applicable to their environment. With the rendering he was able to determine the amount of aircrete needed to complete the second half of the structure connecting the roof to the top barrel and the aircrete insulating the ceiling. The additional section of heating elements was included to give the user preventative options in the case of freezing environments. It also elaborated how the elements were not necessary to every user, but needed to be gauged as necessary depending on the weather patterns in the location selected. The final touch ups to these sections will involve adding calculations and elaborating more if necessary. The pictures below show some of this work.

Stacey Maillet (Graphic Designer) completed her 30th week working on the final edits and revisions to the Murphy bed instructions. This week Stacey focused on the wall section and updating the details, working to finalize the pages by checking the layouts are consistent and adding the greyed-out pieces to the header as they were used. She also continued to work on the components pages. At this point the files are getting larger and some of the steps had to be separated into different files which won’t matter as to the continuity but it was an unexpected setback taking the time to work on files that were slowing down due to technology restrictions and rechecking little details this week. This brings us closer to completion in the instruction manual but there is still a bit more work to be done. Screenshots below are related to this latest progress.

Hannah Copeman (Structural Engineer) completed her 27th week helping complete all the Earthbag Village tutorials. This week Hannah continued the development of the Earthbag Village dome construction by continuing work on the Footer, Foundation and Flooring tutorial. She completed Section 6 (Floor Construction) of the tutorial document by writing the remaining sections for installing the thermal insulation and vapor barrier, placing the welded wire fabric reinforcement in the slab, finishing the concrete floor slab, and applying metal sheet flashing around the interior perimeter of the dome. Hannah also researched sealant products for the foundation and floor insulation and revised previous sections to include the new information. You can see some pictures of this work below.

Zhiheng “Samson” Su (Civil Engineer) also completed his 8th week on the team and woking on the Parking Lot and Sustainable Roadways, Walkways, and Landscaping guides. This week Samson wrote paragraphs about his suggestions for pavement, researched de-icing material, cost estimation of porous asphalt pavement, and permeable interlocking concrete pavers. He also wrote the final narrative for porous asphalt pavement including the benefit, cost, challenges, and solution. Additionally, Samson reviewed the comments from Aidan and added some details about the recycling of the materials. He also added some information about types of flexible and rigid pavement materials in the Pavement Types section. See pictures below.

Vicente J Subiela (Project Management Adviser) completed his 7th week working on the solar microgrid design, sizing, and cost analysis specifics. Vicente has completed a first version of the economic balance, with an example of the economic flows along one day, estimating an idea of the economic deficit. He also discussed with Jae the study of the energy demand for the hot tub and how to incorporate the new collaborators into it. He has added new data to the solar sizing tool, namely the hourly profile (1 – 8760) of thermal demand for the City Center (based on the environmental temperature given by the SAM software weather database) and following the methodology described in the description document. Aidan Geissler (Sustainability Researcher) completed his 4th week helping with 2nd-to-final review, feedback, and content editing. Aidan contributed further to the Glass Recycling content by researching and beginning to write tutorials for DIY glass kilns and glass crushers. He also revisited the Styrofoam Recycling webpage, where he added supplemental information about comparing the R-values of various insulation materials in order to assess the effectiveness of DIY insulation projects using surplus Polystyrene materials. Aidan continued to review and provide guidance and suggestions for other current research, including Pavement Engineering and the latest updates to the Health Insurance research too. Luis Manuel Dominguez (Research Engineer) also joined the team and completed his 1st week helping with research related to the solar microgrid design, sizing, and cost analysis specifics. This week Luis began his research for our Eco-spa Design and how to increase its power efficiency. He began by understanding all of the internal components that draw the most power: the pump and the heater. His next step was to understand where the heat was lost for most in-ground hot tubs. Luis discovered that heat is lost primarily to the atmosphere and evaporation along with heat transfer to the ground. His solution to this issue was to provide insulation from the ground through polyurethane or an expandable foam layer and sand beneath that. These would allow the heat loss effects to be decreased significantly and optimize the hot tub. The pictures below share some of this developing work.

This week the core team continued modeling in SketchUp 3D the window framing for the shed dormer windows of the second floor of the Duplicable City Center Living Dome. We designed the dome frame section using 2×12 lumber and created the initial detailed framing shown below.

Ian Oliver Malinay (Energy Modeler/Analyst) completed his 11th week helping run the energy analysis calculations to help us achieve LEED Platinum status for the Duplicable City Center. This week Ian checked the overall details of the HVAC system. He tried to understand the installation, heating and cooling results and all the spreadsheet calculations and summary of the HVAC analysis developed by previous Engineers, combining this and their efforts for us to attain our goal of LEED Platinum certification of the building. Ian also created preliminary HVAC designs using the DesignBuilder software for the mini-splits air-conditioner. The pictures below relate to this work.

Haozhen “Andrew” He (Civil Design Engineer) completed his 9th and final week as a member of the team helping with the City Center Water Catchment Designs. In Haozhen’s final week working on the project, he completed all the 3D drafting for the City Center rainwater catchment expected Zone D3. He then researched the materials that the zone D-3 can use for its downspout. Two of the materials were identified, polyester and TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer). PVC laminate polyester duct hoses are flame-retardant and self-extinguishing and resist damage from moisture, oils, ozone, and UV rays. Thermoplastic rubber duct hoses have an external wear strip that protects the hose from abrasion when dragged, preventing premature wear-through. The wear strip is molecularly bonded to the hose wall and will not delaminate from the hose. These hoses resist chemicals, moisture, ozone, and UV rays and are 4″ in diameter too, which is the perfect size to connect it to the piping system underground. The team was thinking of using TPE as our final product of zone D-3 downspout because TPE is 10% cheaper than polyester while they both can do the job as downspout. Unfortunately though, this ducting hose is meant for transporting gases, fumes, dust, etc. To use this product (due to its flexible application) in replacement of a rainwater downspout is an interesting alternative, but we have never seen it in application before and therefore cannot say with full confidence that this would be okay. We’ll continue seeking another product.

David Na (Project Management Adviser/Engineer)  completed his 4th week helping with input and management of the Parking Lot and Sustainable Roadways, Walkways, and Landscaping tutorial development, as well as the City Center Water Catchment Designs. David started the week by organizing and running a meeting with his team to set the pace and deadlines for specific action items. During the week, David worked with Mark to finish up the temporary parking lot tutorial for final submission. He also worked with Samson to prepare the roadway and parkway design tutorial for a review by Jae. Along with this, David prepared the civil site design plan and layout for the City Center project so that he can assign Mark and Samson CAD responsibilities for after next Monday’s meeting. Saffet Kilçer (Structural Engineer) completed his 3rd week working on the Duplicable City Center beam and column designs using SAP2000. This week the earthquake records required to determine the earthquake load were downloaded from PEER. The California earthquake (Kern country-1952 / Mw = 7.36) was chosen among many earthquakes and its intensity acceleration-velocity and time file was downloaded. This one was selected because it was the largest and most severe earthquake in California. The earthquake file was edited in the SAP2000 program and drawn in the Time History area. Christopher Kinney (Environmental/Civil Engineer) also completed his 2nd week working on the Duplicable City Center plumbing designs. This week Christopher collaborated with Ksenia about current progress and what needs to be done. He reviewed the latest plumbing plan details and also investigated gray water Systems Plumbing Codes and water fixture flow rates. He compared currently-used water fixture values in the design against those published in the latest international Plumbing Codes and verified its accuracy. The Utah building codes department notified that there is no enforcement against not having coverage over plumbing pipe in over a food storage area. However, this may still be enforced by health inspectors or the agricultural department. Pictures below show some of this work.

Sunitha Paraselli (Mechanical Design Engineer) joined the team and completed her 1st week working on the Duplicable City Center connectors we’ll use to build the domes. This week Sunitha designed an initial City Center Hub component testing both stainless steel AISI Type 316L and Aluminum 2024-T3 and checked deflection and stress under different loads. As far as loading factor is concerned Aluminum was determined to be a good design. It is  readily available and you can also make them by bending. If you are bending, the bending radius can be 2.5 times the material thickness, and there are multiple ways to bend the metal. This coming week Sunitha will work on designing, testing and comparing other designs. The pictures below relate to this work.

This week Jiayu Liang (Landscape Designer) completed her 23rd week helping with the Aquapini & Walipini internal and external landscaping details. This week, Jiayu updated the new structures for the models both in Rhino and Lumion. She has updated the new material of sola wrap for the roofs. She also added new railings and handicap access for the central pond and made a new animation for the outdoor landscape design.

Updated the New Structures for the Models Both in Rhino and Lumion – Click for Aquapini & Walipini

Henry Vennard (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 21st week helping continue the development of the climate batteries for the Aquapini/Walipini structures. It was decided this week that the only way to validate our aquapini/walipini models will be to build the first one and test it. We expect the climate battery system to work perfectly regardless of the Matlab code and based on the assumption that it has worked great for many other people and has allowed a Nebraska farmer to grow citrus with a very small energy bill. When this system is finished and installed, data will be taken to validate its effectiveness and consider its cost effectiveness and whether to install it in the remaining greenhouses. Henry then worked on Walipini research to see how much that could make a difference given data that is already out there. He did not find any conclusive evidence that could be used to update his Matlab model. Pictures below show some of this work-in-progress.

Mayur Rajput (Mechanical Engineer) also completed his 7th week working on the Aquapini/Walipini structures. Mayur met with the team members this week and discussed the future plans based on the calculations completed for the climate battery. He looked into the walipini structures, totally passive greenhouses, and rocket mass heaters and researched how all of it would affect and help in a more energy efficient and sustainable design of the greenhouses. Mayur continued his work to look for heaters and fans for the greenhouse based on the calculations. He found the different available options for the heaters and compared their performances in order to identify the best solution for the greenhouse. He will continue learning about all the different types of heaters and fans, and decide how to select the appropriate equipment for the greenhouse. Wen Zhang (Software Engineer) completed her 40th week as a volunteer working on the Highest Good Network software. For this week of Wen’s work, merge conflicts were solved and new pull requests created for back-end and front-end repositories. The function to delete badges was completed. She also spent quite a lot of time working on the mongoose $pull on the backend (nested data type of badges), and UI fixes on the frontend (Modal and Alert in reactstrap don’t work nicely together). The implementation of alert messages (used in create badge, assign badge, and delete badge) was improved and code cleaned up too. Pictures below are related to this work.

TEKtalent Inc.(a custom programming solutions company) also continued with their 36th week helping with the Highest Good Network software. This week Nithesh and the TEK Talent team were working on the changes in the forget password flow. A new column for reset password has been introduced in user profile and the same will be getting updated with random password on forgot password option. This will allow the user to login with the password they received in email as well as their original password. Once logged in using the random password they have to reset their password and the random password will expire (this is yet to complete). Pictures below show this work.

This week, Chris completed his work on making the Summary Bar responsive as well as building out the backend for the Bug Report form on the Summary Bar. This week the core team continued the editing and creation process of the Earthbag Village “Earth-Dome Loft Structural Engineering and Calculations“ page. This week we focused on improving aesthetics of tables, transforming them into the correct size photos and placing them in the WordPress site, improving formatting of the “Earthbag Village Loft Design Calculations” spreadsheet to make it easier for others to use, and also editing and adding some pictures to clarify technical terminology and make it more understandable for non experts.

Jose Luis Flores (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 31st week helping finish the Net-zero Bathroom component of the Earthbag Village. This week Jose Luis updated the Net-Zero Bathroom cost analysis to include aircrete and the tools necessary to make it. The aircrete was added due to it being chosen as the material of choice to seal the rainwater storage room. To add the solution to the Net-Zero Bathroom tutorial/instructions he began drafting an insulation section. He added all the possible types of insulation that could be used in the structure to either keep it cool or to keep it warm. The strengths and weaknesses of the listed insulation types were included. The fabrication and uses of aircrete were researched in order to gain a better understanding of the material and its fabrication process. After becoming more familiarized with aircrete, Jose Luis added an insulation application section. The section gave a general overview of how the insulation types listed would be used and positioned for max effectiveness. He then began adding an insulation installation section where he will include PVC pipe insulation, insulating the rainwater storage room with an aircrete mold and insulating the ceiling with an aircrete layer. Stacey Maillet (Graphic Designer) completed her 29th week working on the final edits and revisions to the Murphy bed instructions. This week she created a semi-final PDF of all current pages. There are currently 107 pages so far and we have to account for additional wall lumber cutting pages which are not done yet. In a digital format the number of pages does not matter very much, but the components section shows only 1 item per page and this is where we could reformat to reduce the amount of pages. All sections have been looked over this week except for the wall section. Screenshots below are related to this latest progress.

Hannah Copeman (Structural Engineer) completed her 26th week helping complete all the Earthbag Village tutorials. This week Hannah continued the development of the Earthbag Village dome construction by continuing work on the Footer, Foundation and Flooring tutorial. She completed Section 5 (Foundation Construction) of the tutorial document by writing the remaining sections for installing the waterproofing membrane and vertical interior insulation around the foundation, as well as backfilling the foundation area. Hannah also began writing the tutorial for Section 6 (Floor Construction) by writing the introduction, information about leveling the floor, and how to lay the gravel base. Vicente J Subiela (Project Management Adviser) completed his 6th week working on the solar microgrid design, sizing, and cost analysis specifics. This week, Vicente updated the solar sizing tool incorporating previous detailed analysis on the energy demand (Pareto Charts) for the City Center and the Earthbag Village in order to review and update the data, mainly times of use of each power need and the associated power required. This will allow a better connection between the demand and generation. Energy needs have been divided into different types for a better understanding of the demand. Vicente also extended the description document explaining the energy and economic balances, an ongoing development process. Pictures below show some of this work.

This week the core team used the the architect’s AutoCAD plans to begin modeling in SketchUp 3D the window framing for the dormer windows of the second floor of the Duplicable City Center Living Dome according to the latest AutoCAD drawings. This is a challenging task because of the angle of the dome walls and non-traditional framing structure.

Ian Oliver Malinay (Energy Modeler/Analyst) completed his 10th week helping run the energy analysis calculations to help us achieve LEED Platinum status for the Duplicable City Center. This week Ian integrated a new high-performance wall with a higher R-value for us to minimize the penetration of extreme weather conditions from outside, resulting in lower energy consumption from the HVAC system and overall energy savings. Ian revised the R-value, C-Factor, F-factor of walls, floors and slab in Energy Modeling Software. He also checked the ASHRAE Baseline requirement if the parameters meet the standard. Haozhen “Andrew” He (Civil Design Engineer) completed his 8th week as a member of the team helping with the City Center Water Catchment Designs. This week Haozhen designed the 3×4 to 2×3 Gutter Downspout Connector. The purpose of it is to connect the downspout and gutter correctly. Haozhen also designed the sharp edge downspout elbow to connect the sharp turn between zone CR-4 and CP-8. He finished the detail of the gutter and downspout connection implementation for all zones except for Zone D-3 because the downspout design is in progress for that one. After finishing the design of Zone D-3’s downspout, the whole City Center 3D design will be wrapped up by a week from now. Pictures of some of this work are below.

Designed the 3×4 to 2×3 Gutter Downspout Connector – Click for City Center Water Catchment Designs

David Na (Project Management Adviser/Engineer)  completed his 3rd week helping with input and management of the Parking Lot and Sustainable Roadways, Walkways, and Landscaping tutorial development, as well as the City Center Water Catchment Designs. This week David looked into different temporary parking lot alternatives, specifically Grasscrete, Turfblock, and Grasspave2. “Turf” pavement was recommended from Trish, another engineer who believed it could be a potential possibility for the project. These pavements typically utilize concrete or recycled materials to form a grid that sits directly under the turf. It is a unique alternative to the common gravel lot and is environmentally friendly as well as aesthetically pleasing. They are also very easy to install and can be DIY, although a contractor’s help is recommended. Some downsides to these options include increased costs, maintenance (because of weeds), may not be ADA compliant, and that it has a lifespan that greatly exceeds the needs for a temporary parking lot. David has also began mark ups for the ground design for the City Center project. This was done so that once the temporary parking lot tutorial is finished, Mark or Samson can help with the AutoCAD design by implementing the changes David has made. David has also prepared what action items he would like to see finished from Mark and Samson for his next zoom meeting with his team. Pictures below are related to this work.

Jiayu Liang (Landscape Designer) completed her 22nd week helping with the Aquapini & Walipini internal and external landscaping details. This week, Jiayu added more plants to Walipini 1 and Walipini 2. She also worked on last week’s requested edits to these structures.

Henry Vennard (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 20th week helping continue the development of the climate batteries for the Aquapini/Walipini structures. This week Henry and Mayur worked on the heat transfer effectiveness of the climate battery code. Henry also ran 3D simulations with the climate battery system that showed the system worked well in the summer but not very well in the winter, this matched with the results Mayur and Henry got with matlab code. Worked on the Heat Transfer Effectiveness of the Climate Battery Code – Click for Aquapini & Walipini Page

Mayur Rajput (Mechanical Engineer) also completed his 6th week working on the Aquapini/Walipini structures. This week, Mayur continued working on the heat transfer calculations and worked on validating them. He found a spreadsheet calculator for climate battery design and tried validating the duct and fan size calculations. It can also be used to help validate the heat loss calculations done by Henry. There are some changes that need to be done and he’ll keep working on it with Henry. Mayur found a case study of a climate battery where they installed sensors and checked the performance of the system. The case study shows that the system is not able to maintain the inside temperature to the desired value on its own, but it was a case study with a completely above-ground structure. It showed that external heaters would be required to support the system. He checked for the available options for fans and heaters which can be used in the system. There are a variety of options and he is working on finding the appropriate components based on our system. The pictures below represent his work on all of the above.

Itztli De La Torre (Executive Chef) completed his 2nd week working on the Transition Food Self-sufficiency Plan. This week Itztli began to work through the amazing recipes that another vegan based chef had already amassed for the organization. Then he implemented them into the next weekly meal plan. Chef Itz is looking towards the future in planning the rest of the menu with details like before and organizing the week for best results. In this process he will (after finishing the basis of ingredients) begin to itemize the list so that there’s an active inventory sheet. The core team additionally completed our 11th week working on improving the content for all our Values Pages. This week we continued reviewing the Community Contribution page. We also made mind maps for each value: Love/Compassion, Honesty/Integrity, Sustainability, Diversity, Communication, Open Source, Consensus, Community, Freedom, Contribution, Personal Growth, Fulfilled Living, and Highest Good of All. We consolidated how each value feeds into the others, how each is unique/the essences of each, as well as how the infrastructure supports each value and began transcribing handwritten notes using Google.

Success or fail alert was added and she tried uploading some badges to test. It was tested with invalid url links as well. Everything worked as it should and that brought the function to upload new badges to fully complete! The submit button is disabled when badge name, url, or description are missing. TEKtalent Inc.(a custom programming solutions company) also continued with their 35th week helping with the Highest Good Network software. This week Nithesh and the TEK Talent team implemented the Pause and Resume option inside the user profile so that Administrators can pause or resume a user from the profile page of a user. The functionality is similar to the one in the User Management page, upon clicking Pause a popup shall be displayed to ask the resume date, clicking “Pause the user” after selecting a date will pause the user until that date and automatically resume on the selected date. He also made some style/alignment improvements to the buttons on the user profile page. Pictures below show this work.

Noor Qureshi (Insurance Researcher) completed her 28th week helping research One Community’s insurance options. This week Noor updated the narrative of what health insurance plan is the final choice. She updated the ranking of the health insurance point system. Following that, Noor created two projected costs spreadsheets. One spreadsheet organized the costs based on the final plan of choosing, and the second plan organized the costs across all plans. She also ranked these plans in the spreadsheet. Aidan Geissler (Sustainability Researcher) completed his 3rd week helping with 2nd-to-final review, feedback, and content editing. Aidan completed his review of the One Community’s current Health Insurance Research, where made several suggestions for clarifying and supplemental information. He also finished editing the Styrofoam Recycling Webpage, where he fixed various formatting issues and improved the text’s readability. To ensure that the webpage’s research was sufficiently comprehensive, he conducted research and incorporated his findings on topics such as the difference between Styrofoam and Polystyrene, and the impacts of Polystyrene on both human health and the environment. Lastly, Aidan began working on incomplete Glass Recycling Research, by collecting, reviewing, and summarizing useful resources on DIY glass recycling methods, such as how to build glass kilns and glass crushers. Jose Luis Flores (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 30th week helping finish the Net-zero Bathroom component of the Earthbag Village. This week Jose Luis continued developing a solution to seal the hole on the roof of the Net-Zero Bathroom. The seal was to keep the rain storage room insulated by sealing off the water collection hole in the roof while not disrupting the inflow of rainwater. Last week’s design had the right idea in packaging, but the material used was not durable and would lead to installation difficulties. He collaborated with his supervisor and determined that an aircrete mold would be optimal. The first idea was to make two identical aircrete molds that would sit on top of the top center water barrel and connect to the roof hole, the rainwater would be able to flow into the barrel. By making two molds, one half could be removed and leave access to the debris filter on top of the barrel. The two molds were to be held in place with wing screw and a wing nut fastened through eye screws attached to the molds. Measurements and calculations were done to determine the maximum height of the mold due the constraints from the interior roof frame. The max height was determined to be 10.76 inches, well short of the 15.5 inches needed. The final adjustment was to make the two molds only 7.3 inches tall the same as the distance from the interior roof frame to the barrel. And on top of that first mold would be another complete mold being bound to the roof frame by aircrete. The half mold was calculated to be less than 15 pounds, light enough for a person to lift it without being injured. The pictures below show some of this work.

Stacey Maillet (Graphic Designer) completed her 28th week working on the final edits and revisions to the Murphy bed instructions. This week was focused on rebuilding the components pages and reworking the groups with new feedback for labelling used pieces in grey patterned lines after use. We also received updated renders for the electrical work and tried to use those instead of the older renders. There is still some overlap between the electrical instructions and the wall section where outlet installation and placement is called out in both groups. The additional electrical outlets that are not installed into the Murphy bed, but into the structure’s walls and loft space, which has led to some confusion. The Murphy bed is so integrated into the structure of the dome that it is hard to know how to keep these instructions limited to the bed without explaining some portion of the loft space, walls and doorway. Zhiheng “Samson” Su (Civil Engineer) also completed his 6th week on the team and woking on the Parking Lot and Sustainable Roadways, Walkways, and Landscaping guides. This week Samson finished the research of both “Rigid Pavement Design” and “Flexible Pavement Design” and began research about Turf Block, Porous Asphalt, and Decomposed Granite Paving. Vicente J Subiela (Project Management Adviser) completed his 5th week working on the solar microgrid design, sizing, and cost analysis specifics. This week, Vicente checked the energy needs distribution for the cases of 20-50 and 50-100 people for an initial perspective on the thermal weight on the total demand / installed power, concluding that, according to the current estimation, heating demands more than 75% of energy (case of 20-50 p). He has improved the SAM simulations to a first view of the energy & economic balance and started a text describing the topic to achieve the net zero balance along the year. He has incorporated new relevant consulting links (a list of incentives applicable to the location). He also updated the tasks for the collaboration team, for faster incorporation into the ongoing work. Pictures below show some of this work.

Aidan Geissler (Sustainability Researcher) completed his 2nd week helping with 2nd-to-final review, feedback, and content editing. Aidan finished reviewing the Most Sustainable Flooring Materials webpage. He added titles to links, ensured that links functioned properly, added useful anchor links, defined technical terminology, located and added relevant resources, and conducted research to provide additional contextual information and content to fill in gaps. Aidan then reviewed the current Health Insurance content, where he provided useful comments and suggestions to guide the development of the research and analysis. Finally, Aidan began editing the Styrofoam Recycling Webpage, by correcting typos, fixing missing and broken links, and rephrasing for the sake of clarity and ease of reading. Pictures below show some of the work on these three components.

This week, Qiuheng focused on redoing the structure model in Lumion as well as updating the new planting design. She changed the greenhouse into a simpler and smaller version. In addition, she modified the path system in the landscape to meet the doors of the domes. Qiuheng also began preparing the first draft of the outside walkthrough video. Focused on Redoing the Structure Model in Lumion and Updating the New Planting Design – Click for Duplicable City Center

Haozhen “Andrew” He (Civil Design Engineer) completed his 7th week as a member of the team helping with the City Center Water Catchment Designs. This week, Haozhen did the research on the usability of the roof hangers in the absence of the fascia board. He then designed and drafted the “Roof Hanger” from scratch via AutoCAD 3D. He made sure that the scaling and detail are correct and the final result matches the size of the gutter and functions correctly. Haozhen also worked with David on the subject of designing an optimum downspout for the zone D-3. David’s first proposal was using the Rainbird, polyethylene tube. However, by our research, polypropylene is susceptible to quick degradation by sunlight while polyester innately resists deterioration. Polypropylene is useful for applications that require high heat, chemical, or electrical stresses, but polyester is more suitable for outdoor uses and environmental exposure. Haozhen also designed the Downspout elbow connection with model detail, worked on designing the connection between gutter and the downspout using AutoCAD 3D, and worked on fixing the downspout and gutter connection detail. David Na (Project Management Adviser/Engineer)  completed his 2nd week helping with input and management of the Parking Lot and Sustainable Roadways, Walkways, and Landscaping tutorial development, as well as the City Center Water Catchment Designs. This week David worked with Mark to complete the temporary parking lot tutorial for a final review. In the tutorial David and Mark go into detail to discuss everything from the necessary permits needed to be obtained to the different types of temporary parking lot design options. They conclude the tutorial with a comparative analysis for each design option and explain why One Community Global believes that TrueGrid’s paver design was best suited for the project. David has also worked with Andrew to brainstorm possible solutions for the City Center’s Sunrise patio drainage problem. After looking into the CAD design and the 3D renderings for the building, David has proposed installing area drains on the sunrise patio that would collect and discharge the flow onto the second floor which would then be collected and discharged to ground level via downspout. However, this solution is not the best solution because it brings the water into the building and would therefore lead to potential leak problems, noise pollution, and other types of inconveniences. With this in mind, David and Andrew are both working on researching an alternative solution which will utilize a flexible drainage pipe with a sock or pipe guard to protect against UV damage. Lastly, David worked on setting up the introductory sections for the sustainable roadways, walkways, and landscaping. Pictures below are related to this work.

This is a challenging task because of the angle of the dome walls and non-traditional framing structure. Bahy’s focus this week was scaling last week’s designs to fit the specific measurements of the dome, as shown below.

Mayur Rajput (Mechanical Engineer) also completed his 5th week working on the Aquapini/Walipini structures. He determined the remaining variables of the heat transfer equations and checked the results. The results seem promising and he moved forward with checking the performance of the system for the different types of soils. The system looks most promising with sandy clay as the soil in the climate battery. Mayur then checked how the burial depth affects the system performance, as the burial depth increased the system got more efficient. But he needs to check how feasible it is to increase the burial depth. For now, the burial depth is kept at 13 feet (3.9624 meters) and he’ll research more about how much it can be varied and what would be a practical value. Mayur then started looking for the materials which can be used for the climate battery and their costs. He will continue working on that as he moves forward. Itztli spent time looking for recipe ideas that he thinks will most easily adapt all of the requirements while being varied and mindful of waste. The core team additionally completed our 10th week working on improving the content for all our Values Pages. This week we finished up editing the Fulfilled Living content. Specifically, we shortened paragraphs and sentences, and transformed passive voice, as well as proofread the final product before submitting for final review and then publishing the changes. We also strengthened the body of the text, by adding additional text and expanding on the material that was already in place, updating the text that was linked to other pages and adding two new graphics. We then began reviewing the Community Contribution page.

Jose Luis Flores (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 30th week helping finish the Net-zero Bathroom component of the Earthbag Village. This week Jose Luis continued on developing plans and ideas for the prevention of frozen pipes and structure insulation. He began by brainstorming and researching materials and devices that could be used to seal off the hole in the roof from the water storage room. His first idea involved constructing a plunger-like seal made of durable and flexible elastomeric insulation that could be lifted by a screw and installed on the roof grate. The problem with the device was that it would have restricted rain flow into the water barrels and possibly causing secondary failures on the roof. He then began working on a device that would still allow rain water flow, but eliminate convection cooling from the exposed hole. After doing more research Jose began rendering the device on Solid Works. He decided to attach a take off collar on the ceiling aligning concentric with the hole and having another one attached to the barrel inlet over its filter. To ensure a proper seal a circular strip of elastomeric insulation was used to help seal the collar on the sloped ceiling. The collars outlet on the ceiling was wrapped with a layer of insulation and secured with a hose clamp. The insulation only scaled a bit more than half the distance between the barrel and the hole. From there another piece of insulation was wrapped around the collar attached to the barrel and the hanging insulation. The insulation was secured with a hose clamp to the ceiling insulation duct. The hose clamp is used for a secure fit and an easy removal with a cordless drill to allow easy access to the barrel filter. The pictures below show some of this work.

She continued research on the interior trimming product, updated previous drawings in the FFF document to reflect updated changes, and completed the first three sections (5.1, 5.2 and 5.3) in the Foundation Construction section of the FFF document. Mark Wambua (Civil Engineer) completed his 5th week working on the Parking Lot and Sustainable Roadways, Walkways, and Landscaping guides. This week mark worked on converting his research on irrigation, water catchment, and temporary parking into a tutorial. This was done in order to make it easier so a non industry consumer would be able to follow steps into creating the necessary sustainable and eco friendly home amenities. Worked on Converting Research on Irrigation, Water Catchment, and Temporary Parking Into a Tutorial – Click for Parking Lot Page

Zhiheng “Samson” Su (Civil Engineer) also completed his 5th week on the team and woking on the Parking Lot and Sustainable Roadways, Walkways, and Landscaping guides. This week Samson finished the chapter “General Aspect of Pavement Engineering.” He also finished simplifying the chapters, “General Aspects of Pavement Engineering” and “Pavement Engineering Consideration” and submitted them for initial review. He additionally started to review the new chapter “Rigid Pavement Design,” finished the outline of this chapter and finished the explanation for different types of Rigid Pavement by showing the usage, advantage, and disadvantage of them. He introduced engineering properties and performance factors with the pictures of the table too. He also introduced different types of concrete, including PCC, RSC, and RCC. See pictures below.

This week Vicente reviewed and improved the solar sizing spreadsheet tool, namely the calculation of inter row spacing to avoid self-shading for flat and sloping ground. This was needed to better estimate the total space requirements. Additionally, specific cells have been colored for a better understanding and use of the tool, and new links were added for additional support / consultation, as well as other software and rates information. This week Ksenia Akimov (Plumbing Engineer) completed her 20th week working on the Duplicable City Center plumbing designs. This week she reviewed the Uponor radiant floor designs, continued research for hydraulic calculations, finalized the boiler for radiant floor, and worked on trying to find what code requires for placing water and sanitation lines above food storage. Qiuheng Xu (Landscape Designer) completed her 19th week helping with the Duplicable City Center, now focused solely on the landscaping design. Qiuheng continued working on the planting design concept and details. She focused on developing the ground texture including understory plants, ground layer plans, and paving materials, getting ready for the walkthrough video. Below are some images showing her work.

Ian Oliver Malinay (Energy Modeler/Analyst) completed his 10th week helping run the energy analysis calculations to help us achieve LEED Platinum status for the Duplicable City Center. This week Ian processed the insulation / energy efficiency related material into designbuilder as per design requirement and recommendation. He updated the details of the following into the DesignBuilder: Roof R-value, Ceiling insulation, Roof solar absorptance, Ceiling layer by layer details, & Roof layer by layer details. Ian checked all the material that is required to be updated based on the proposed building process. He changed the material of the dormer sill because DesignBuilder automatically set the material for it. Ian also changed the floor slab of the second floor (exposed) same with the 2nd floor slab inside the dome. Pictures below are related to this work.

Haozhen “Andrew” He (Civil Design Engineer) completed his 6th week as a member of the team helping with the City Center Water Catchment Designs. This week Haozhen fixed the problem “Gutter Conflicts with the Pivot Door” by using the Gutter Hangers to avoid the conflicts created by the original design. During Haozhen’s AutoCAD work, he found and fixed the bug that caused the conversion from SAP2000 to AutoCAD drawing that some of the 3D models of the drawing are missing. Haozhen fixed that by recreating the 3D models which are missing. Haozhen also starts working on the downspout CAD drawing implementation. Pictures of some of this work are below.

Mayur Rajput (Mechanical Engineer) also completed his 4th week working on the Aquapini/Walipini structures. Mayur worked on determining the heat transfer in the climate battery, how the excess energy is being stored underground during summer and later utilized in winter. He considered the underground temperature at 13 feet to be constant at 6°C / 43 °F and considered the temperatures for our location. Based on this, he calculated the performance of the system and found out the output temperatures of the system. The burial depth code seems to be not giving proper results and it can be determined with the same code used for heat transfer calculations as well. So he will try to use that moving forward and the same code can also be used to determine the component dimensions for the system. Mayur met his teammate and discussed the performance of the system. He will continue working on determining how the energy is stored and utilized later and how it improves the performance of the system. The pictures below represent his work on all of the above.

his week the core team completed 25 hours managing One Community emails, social media accounts, interviewing potential new volunteer team members, and managing volunteer-work review and collaboration not mentioned elsewhere here.

The core team additionally completed our 9th week working on improving the content for all our Values Pages. This week we took a deep dive into the Fulfilled Living content. We began the process of reducing passive voice and also making sentences shorter and easier to read. The section has been edited substantially with the goal of the significance of this value called out more clearly. Check out the pictures below as examples of this work-in-progress.

Wen Zhang (Software Engineer) completed her 37th week as a volunteer working on the Highest Good Network software. This week Wen worked on several fixes and updates to clearing name fields after submit, handling requests with only first name or last name, fixing an unhandled rejection error 404 bug, and handling requests that input name after assigning badges. This week Nithesh and the TEK Talent team were working on the code review comments and the suggestions in the user profile area. They also identified the root cause of the ‘email not sending’ bug. Chris Weilacker (Software Engineer) completed his 21st week working on the Highest Good Network software. This week, Chris tested the email sending and found a limit of 16 emails that GMail was throttling us at, in order to get around the limit he implemented a timeout that allowed one infringement email to be sent every half second until finished. The tests to Chris’s email showed this allowed 63 infringement emails to be sent without any problems. He also updated the users on the development database to be listed as 0 weekly committed hours to prevent any further emails being sent to old test accounts, while updating the master branch of Azure to stop emails sending until we enable them to be. Some of them took a decent amount of time since he found some bugs in the Assign Badge front-end branch, and it happened due to an outdated version of the backend. He also fixed/updated the unit-test for Timelog.jsx component to bring the cover from 76.92% to 83.08%. Pictures below show some of this work.

This week the core team continued review and development of the Earthbag Village Footer, Foundation, and Flooring tutorials. We reviewed work on sections 3, 4, & 5 of the FFF doc relating to footer construction and centerpoint re-establishment and compass installation. Section 5 was combined with 3 and three chapters were added to section 4. We then followed up with a phone call resulting in a mutual review of updating the first 48 pages of the FFF and removing outdated information. Also a discussion determined utilization of sheet metal attachment to the concrete floor with tapcon screws to cover the perimeter floor insulation. A new drawing will be drawn and reviewed to determine its feasibility and cost effectiveness. Pictures below show some of this work.

This week Jose Luis Flores (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 29th week helping finish the Net-zero Bathroom component of the Earthbag Village. This week Jose Luis began working on the cost analysis for the pipe insulation and freeze prevention. He began using the material list containing the pipe lengths, elbows, and tees to calculate the quantity of polyethylene foam insulation needed. Additional research and analysis had to be done to prevent the pipes from freezing due to the water catchment roof’s design. The water storage room is susceptible because of the orifice in the roof allowing air to flow through the room and accelerate the possibility of frozen pipes due to convection cooling. A few measures were considered to prevent this from happening. One of the prevention measures was to line the spigots with fiberglass wrap along with the insulation foam. The extra insulation being necessary because of the use of copper in that area. Insulating the barrels was considered, but it was found to be costly. Another preventative was to wrap the barrels more susceptible to cooling with a heat cable and cover the cable with foil tape to evenly distribute the heat. Jose simulated the center barrels to have the heat cable wrapped around them because of the opening on top of the top center barrel that allows rainwater to flow in. Stacey Maillet (Graphic Designer) completed her 26th week working on the final edits and revisions to the Murphy bed instructions. This week Stacey mostly finished the benches & table group. There were some boards to lay out and some hardware to add to the directions. She hopes to finish the group this coming week and submit a PDF for review. Stacey is also going to try to implement a used-board effect with this group, to show which boards are used vs. not. She is thinking to use a gray color or maybe a pattern of lines. Hannah Copeman (Structural Engineer) completed her 24th week helping complete all the Earthbag Village tutorials. This week Hannah continued the development of the Earthbag Village dome construction by continuing work on the Footer, Foundation and Flooring tutorial and revising the loft design process. She edited the first four completed sections of the FFF doc to remove all obsolete information, began work on the foundation by researching the use of rebar to join the layers, and continued the development of interior trimming in the dome. Hannah also added image narrative and an executive introduction to the loft design process. You can see some pictures of this work below.

This week, Samson finished explanation of the new section, “Materials”, “Maintainability and Constructibility”, and “Pavement Life-Cycle”. And he started a new chapter, “General Aspects of Pavement Engineering”, and provided an introduction for the new chapter. Also, Samson finished explanation of the section “Pavement Structure Layers”, “Types of pavement projects” and introduced the section “Roles, Resources, and Proprietary Items”. See pictures below.

Vicente J Subiela (Project Management Adviser) completed his 3rd week working on the solar microgrid design, sizing, and cost analysis specifics. The focus for Vicente this last week has been upgrading the solar design spreadsheet by including a basic energy & economic balance based on the annual average day, identifying preliminary relevant outcomes (economic balance requires deeper research to know the current reality on rates, credits, incentives, etc.). He also added more useful links and a section for the calculation of the inter row spacing (“Outcomes” tab), which is a key value to estimate the required ground area for the PV field. Vicente wrote a first list of points / steps needed related to the legal and economic aspects which will function as a preliminary guide for this part of the project. New exploration on SAM software was also made to see the annual profiles generation & demand (internal SAM values). Pictures below show some of this work.

This week Angela Mao (Sustainability Researcher) completed her 23rd week as a member of the team and working on content for the Most Sustainable Lightbulbs and Light Bulb Companies and the Best Small and Large-scale Community Options for Sustainable Processing & Reuse of Non-recyclables tutorial. This week, Angela integrated requested edits to her lightbulb tutorial. Specifically, she ranked the lightbulb products and added pictures to them. Then, in her Google Spreadsheet, Angela ranked the products that weren’t featured and gave rationale as to why. Pictures below show some of this work-in-progress.

Qiuheng Xu (Landscape Designer) completed her 18th week helping with the Duplicable City Center, now focused solely on the landscaping design. Qiuheng focused on setting up key frames and components of the planting design. She divided the planting design into three themes, including four seasons front entrance, cherry blossom alley on the North and South, and warm winter (autumn) on the East. Lindy Rzonca (Sustainability Analyst) also completed her 13th week helping with sustainability research and now focused on the Best Small and Large-scale Community Options for Sustainable Processing and Reuse of Non-recyclables tutorial. This week, Lindy worked on the category of non-recyclable paper products. Originally, the category was limited to waxed paper and cardboard. However, she found that this category could be opened up to paper products that aren’t recyclable and aren’t compostable. This entailed doing some additional research on disposal of these difficult to discard paper products and finishing up the section. She also worked on the universal waste section, doing research and edits on that, as well. The pictures below relate to this work.

He was able to almost complete the preliminary construction material data as shown on the figure below. Henry Vennard (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 18th week helping continue the development of the climate batteries for the Aquapini/Walipini structures.  This week Henry met with Mayur and discussed troubleshooting the matlab code, specifically working on the semi-infinite solid heat transfer section. Together they made good progress with this section by using a new source with relevant equations. They are also investigated transfer functions and positive feedback loops because they think that’s what is causing problems in the main greenhouse code. Md Amanullah Kabir (Mechanical Engineer) also continued with his 7th week on the team, now focusing on the Aquapini/Walipini electrical layout. This week Md completed the initial wiring cost analysis of Walipini 1 and the large aquapini based on the design measurements (height, width, depth). A spreadsheet was created so costs can easily be recalculated if the unit cost of the components change. Md estimated that Walipinis 1,2,3 and Zenapinis 1, and 2 wiring costs will be the same based on the design analysis. The large-scale production aquapini has a slightly different cost. Areas identified as needing more cost analysis research include: Permit License Cost, Installation Cost, Labor Cost, Inspection Cost, Maintenance Cost, and other Miscellaneous Costs. Mayur Rajput (Mechanical Engineer) also completed his 3rd week working on the Aquapini/Walipini structures. Mayur continued to work on finding the optimum burial depth for the climate battery. He researched about transient heat transfer functions and about heat transfer in semi infinite solids with a single pipe, he calculated the heat transfer in such a system and calculated the output temperature of the pipe. This would help in calculating the system size and component dimensions. He also continued researching about the different thermal properties for the different types of soils as the last results did not seem to provide an adequate answer. Multiple references specify different values for the thermal properties (absorptivity and thermal diffusivity) of soils. Mayur calculated the thermal properties based on most of the observations and tried finding the optimum burial depth. The results still seem to be a little off for now and he will continue his work based on these results. The pictures below represent his work on all of the above.

We updated formatting and made language consistent with the other One Community values pages. We made edits to make the overall readability smoother, by shortening sentences and adding language for a deeper understanding. Additionally we reviewed all resources listed within the resources sections, and finalized the additional FAQs for the value of Consensus Self-governance.

Wen Zhang (Software Engineer) completed her 36th week as a volunteer working on the Highest Good Network software. This week Wen got the bug (TypeError: toAdd.add is not a function) fixed. She added text to display the number of badges selected, and created functions to clear the data of selected badges when needed. Wen added some styling to the contents of the badge assignment tab. Lastly, she worked on name validation and error handling so that the user would get messages about how the request goes and the reason for failure.

Vy’s main goal this week was working on fixing/updating unit-testing files so that the yarn test command works again without running into the “JavaScript out of memory” error. He discussed it with Chris, and read a few articles about unit-testing in React to be able to find out the problem. Vy reviewed one pull request and approved it. This week Jose Luis Flores (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 28th week helping finish the Net-zero Bathroom component of the Earthbag Village. This week Jose Luis finished updating the AutoCAD roof plan to coincide with the roof access updates in the Solid Works rendering. The updates included step-by-step diagrams of the roof saddle rafts construction. The rafts are cut at compound angles, but by breaking it down the process was simplified. The OBD sheathing was updated to include dimensions on where the flat head screws were to be installed. The roof saddle flash had to be updated as well to take into account the peak that is formed from the contact of the two pieces of OBD sheathing touching. The original flash that was over the peak had to be cut into two separate pieces with one of the cuts being angled to take into account the ending slope. More dimensions were added to the remaining diagrams to have more descriptive illustrations. With the completed updates, he then added more diagrams to the roof access flash installation section of the tutorial. He included descriptive instructions under the majority of the diagrams and completed the draft of the section. The pictures below show some of this work.

Stacey Maillet (Graphic Designer) completed her 25th week working on the final edits and revisions to the Murphy bed instructions. This week Stacey focused on working on updating the components page. There are screws and nails and other parts that were not included in the assembly for the installation of some of the components. Some parts might come with their own screws and some we might need to add specialty lengths to the list just for those items. Realizing there are a lot more pieces than had been laid out before in the draft, Stacey is revisiting the links and getting new images to remake the page – making sure to list out the pages where the items are being used and also adding descriptions where needed. Hannah Copeman (Structural Engineer) completed her 23rd week helping complete all the Earthbag Village tutorials. This week Hannah continued the development of the Earthbag Village dome construction by revising the loft design process and continuing work on the Footer, Foundation and Flooring tutorial. She revised the loft design process to include more narrative and imagery. She also continued to analyze different options for interior floor trimming, finished the initial draft of Section 4 (Footer Construction) in the FFF doc, and eliminated Section 5 (Compass Installation) of the FFF doc to combine its information with relevant info in Section 3 (Centerpoint Re-Establishment) of the document. This week, Samson edited the section from the last two weeks with a better format and strikethroughs for the unnecessary details. He finished the explanation of new sections: “ Soil Characteristics”, “Climate”, and “Existing Pavement Type and Condition”. He also introduced the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), California R-value, engineering alternatives for expansive soils, the map of California pavement climate regions, and the consideration for reviewing existing pavement type and condition. Vicente J Subiela (Project Management Adviser) completed his 2nd week working on the solar microgrid design, sizing, and cost analysis specifics. This week, Vicente worked on the creation of a spreadsheet to assess the energy balance and solar system size. Preliminary calculations have been made with the support of the online software PVgis and complementary calculations by SAM (downloadable energy simulation software developed by NREL). Other support software was identified and the action plan has been updated including a section for the legal and economic aspects. Pictures below show some of this work.

Angela Mao (Sustainability Researcher) completed her 22nd week as a member of the team and working on content for the Most Sustainable Lightbulbs and Light Bulb Companies and the Best Small and Large-scale Community Options for Sustainable Processing & Reuse of Non-recyclables tutorial. This week, Angela implemented requested edits from last week to her lightbulb tutorial and added pictures to the product descriptions. She created a written list of the best lightbulbs and added in an explanation of her ranking. Then, she continued to work on the non-recyclables tutorial, adding in images and video links. Qiuheng Xu (Landscape Designer) completed her 17th week helping with the Duplicable City Center, now focused solely on the landscaping design. And Ian Oliver Malinay (Energy Modeler/Analyst) completed his 8th week helping run the energy analysis calculations to help us achieve LEED Platinum status for the Duplicable City Center. This week Ian revised the construction appearance of the entrance and revised the dormer windows to the latest design and updated the material data of it for energy modeling. Ian also arranged all the site data of the windows and doors considering the quality and the affordability of it without compromising the total energy savings of the building. Haozhen “Andrew” He (Civil Design Engineer) completed his 4th week as a member of the team and now focusing on the City Center Water Catchment Designs. This week’s focus was the gutter and downspout design. Haozhen Worked on researching our state drainage code and precipitation and then selected proper downspout to attach with the 6″ K-style gutter. He then created a 3D detailed part in DWG format. The fascia and soffit design was also created in a 3D DWG file format. Unrelated to this, he also helped with some research on the thermal diffusivity and absorptivity for different soil properties. Pictures below show some of this work-in-progress.

While doing this we also made some small tweaks to the automation tool we are developing for this same editing process.

Henry Vennard (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 17th week helping continue the development of the climate batteries for the Aquapini/Walipini structures.  This week Henry continued work on the matlab program. He troubleshooted by breaking the program down into small sections and testing each section. He has reached out to his teammate Mayur and will be meeting next week to go over the code and the specific problem. Md Amanullah Kabir (Mechanical Engineer) also continued with his 6th week on the team, now focusing on the Aquapini/Walipini electrical layout. This week Md made a rough sketch to analyze the exact location of the components in order to do the electrical wiring. For 100 amp breaker panel service, a 2-gauge non-metallic sheathed electrical cable is recommended. The cable must contain one or two hot wires depending on needs, one neutral wire, and one ground wire. Each wire should be 2-gauge in size. Underground Feeder (UF) is also recommended. It is a type of nonmetallic cable designed for wet locations and direct burial in the ground and commonly used for supplying outdoor fixtures. Total electrical cost for Individual Walipini had also researched. Considering placement of equipment’s total wiring cost is $589.28 (wiring length: 254’ and wiring cost per ft=$2.32), Breaker cost $50 (Size: 100 Amp, can hold 20 circuits. 20 full size breakers only) and the central bulb cost $8.00 (60watt, Brightness: 800 Lumens, Energy used: 8-Watt) for individual Walipini. Other costs might be taken into consideration: labor cost, permit license cost inspection cost, miscellaneous cost etc. You can see some pictures related to this below.

Mayur Rajput (Mechanical Engineer) also completed his 2nd week working the Aquapini/Walipini structures. This week he researched about the different soils that can be used in the climate battery and is working on determining their thermal properties (‘a’ – absorptivity, ‘a0’ – thermal diffusivity, ‘e’ – emissivity, ‘k’ – thermal conductivity) in order to find the most efficient soil. Mayur figured out all the properties but one (e) and is working on determining the last one. These properties will help determine the optimum burial depth for the climate battery. He worked on the matlab code for the burial depth while keeping the emissivity constant for now. The graphs for the temperature of the soils throughout the day are pretty much similar. Mayur will check the results again after figuring out the emissivity of the soils. He will continue this and see how the different thermal properties are affecting the burial depth. The pictures below represent his work on all of the above.

The introduction to the Sustainability page was re-written and anchor and other formatting was fixed. In preparation for adequately reviewing and improving the value of Community, one of our team members also re-read and typed up notes from Scott Peck’s book “The Different Drum” to include within the Community content. Noor Qureshi (Insurance Researcher) completed her 24th week helping research One Community’s insurance options. This week Noor formatted some of the notes on her research by adding definitions to the key terms of what is most important to understanding the goals of this research project. Chris Weilacker (Software Engineer) completed his 19th week working on the Highest Good Network software. This week, Chris worked on getting the emails successfully sent for Weekly Summaries and infringements. Chris helped fill in new member Vy Dao on what was completed as far as Unit Testing for the different components and his process for doing Pull Requests. Chris also took a look at having Admins be able to click the red/green button on the leaderboard and see a different users dashboard, something that may require a couple of weeks to implement across all of the dashboard components. Then he fixed a color issue for the top of the dashboard. You can see some pictures related to this below.

Vy Dao (Software Developer) joined the team and completed his 1st week working on the Highest Good Network software. This week, Vy spent a lot of time reading all of the documentation from the on-boarding orientation. After that he reviewed all of the different unit-testing files that we already have on our Github repo. He also discusses with Chris about how to work on Unit-testings and PRs reviews. He did review of 2 Pull Requests this week, making some changes to a few files for one of the Pull Requests. After the newest merge he found, for some reason, the yarn test coverage was not working anymore. He believed this happens because some of the unit-testing files are too old and caused a JavaScript out of memory error. He then investigated all of the old unit-testing files, especially under the UserManagement folder such as: NewUserPopup.test.js and USerProfileModal.test.js. Yueru Zhao (Software Engineer joined the team and completed her 1st week working on the Highest Good Network software.This week Yueru began development of the initial reporting filter page by completing project, person, and team tables. Each project, person and team table can render the options dynamically in real time. All three categories have 3 filter options available: active, inactive, and all. For projects, users have more filter options like data priority level etc. Showing all the options in table layout makes it easier for people to view all the options compared with the dropdown list used in the Ember/current app version. Robert is an avid board gamer and enjoys designing board games in his free time. Focused on mindfulness practice and sustainability, he is thrilled to be a part of the team!
