Global Eco-cooperative Movement – One Community Weekly Progress Update #447

One Community is forwarding a global eco-cooperative movement for “The Highest Good of All“. We are supporting this through open source and sustainable solutions for food, energy, housing, education, for-profit and non-profit economic design, social architecture, fulfilled living, global stewardship practices, and more. We’re combining these to build teacher/demonstration hubs purposed to make replication easy enough, affordable enough, and demonstrate the lifestyle as attractive enough to spread on its own.

Jose Luis Flores (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 65th week helping finish the Net-zero Bathroom component of the Earthbag Village. This week Jose Luis began researching proper pump selection analysis to ensure the correct pump is used to provide adequate pressure and ensure an economical and reliable choice. He began by researching the relationship between inadequate pressure to frictional losses and operating pump pressures. Upon reading theoretical text for a knowledgeable analysis, he began calculating the frictional head losses of the system at various points and plotting the values with their respective flow rate. With that in place, Jose Luis generated a trendline from the graph and used the function describing the average change of head loss with respect to flow rate and generated a graph using the function at various flow rates. The purpose was to compare the graph to decreasing head loss of the pump. The intersection between the resistance curve and the pump curve is the flow rate the pump will operate at when in steady state. The next step will be comparing various pumps and seeing which one will provide the necessary flow rate without applying too much pressure to the system and not overworking the pump. The pictures below show some of this work.

Daniela Andrea Parada (Civil Engineering Student) completed her 16th week helping with the Sustainable Roadways, Walkways, and Landscaping tutorial development, mainly focused now on the Earthbag Village components. This week Daniela started by uploading PDFs to the dropbox and attempted to share google sheets that contained tables with last week’s works. Daniela then started measuring the roadways that connected the parking lot, City Center, Earthbag Village, and Aquapini/Walipini. With this information she recalculated the roadway costs. She then itemized a list of materials for the water catchment/drainage system of the Earthbag Village. After that, Daniela worked on updating the water conservation webpage, which included creating a new CAD image of the Earthbag Village, rewriting some paragraphs explaining the decisions behind the design of the drainage system, and meeting with David and editing and revising her previous work based on that meeting. Pictures below are related to this work.

The Compression Team consisting of Dominick Banuelos (Civil Engineering Intern), Jarot Tamba (Civil Engineering Intern), John Paul D. Matining (Civil Engineer Intern), and Marcus Nguyen (Civil Engineering Intern) completed their 13th week helping with the Aircrete and earthbag compression testing. This week the Compression Testing Team tested Drexel as an alternative to 7th Generation Dish Soap to determine if the team can more reliably make aircrete that resists collapsing. The team successfully made a 3 cylinder batch (approximately 4.5 gallons). After 2 hours the results showed no noticeable collapsing. The team also looked for soil in the local classifieds and searched for clay to use for stabilized earth cylinders. The Team calculated needing about 0.7 cubic yards of soil. Supplies for cement were also restocked for current and future tests. They also continued organizing the documents in preparation for pre-testing. Pictures below are related to this work.

DUPLICABLE CITY CENTER PROGRESS

duplicable city center, open source city hub, laundry, dining, swimming pool, hot tub, kitchen, library, game roomOne Community is supporting a global eco-cooperative movement through a Duplicable and Sustainable City Center that is LEED Platinum certified/Sustainable, can feed 200 people at a time, provide laundry for over 300 people, is beautiful, spacious, and saves resources, money, and space:

This week Ian Oliver Malinay (Energy Modeler/Analyst) completed his 32nd week helping run the energy analysis calculations to help us achieve LEED Platinum status for the Duplicable City Center. This week, Ian continued the narrative report for the whole-building simulation of LEED. He processed the interior and exterior lighting, receptacle and process loads and HVAC systems for Baseline whole building simulation. This guide is applicable to model the building based on LEED guidelines. This Baseline design is another energy model to compare the energy savings of the two design cases. Please see below related screenshots of activity for reference.

Luis Manuel Dominguez (Research Engineer) completed his 24th week helping with research related to the City Center Eco-spa designs. This week Luis made some modifications to the City Center Spa design schematic, incorporating a submersible pump. This pump allows for rapid draining without the permanent installation of a pump and plumbing. This would make it significantly more convenient to drain the spa quickly for cleaning and any maintenance that might be necessary. Further research has also been completed with regards to the pump and the blower. Finding the perfect pump has taken some time, but after Luis’s collaboration with the team, a selection should be coming soon. Pictures below are related to this work.

And George Koshy (Design Engineer) completed his 5th week working on the Duplicable City Center connectors we’ll use to build the domes. The week George designed variations of the bracket to see the effects of stress. He found that the stress in the wide brackets are lower by 2*e^8, but still higher in yield stress. He concluded that more design iterations are required and other factors need to be reassessed. He conducted FEA for different load conditions when the brackets are fully suspended. He interpreted the results to confirm the inferences and assumptions. He also completed assembly of the center hub, including the redesign of the LVL beams, brackets, and fasteners. The pictures below relate to this work.

And Carlos Lillo (Engineering Technician) completed his 11th week helping with the pallet furniture designs for the Duplicable City Center guest rooms. After many discarded thoughts and ideas, Carlos proposed a creative way to show the animations on the Bed Pallet using see-through parts. These were needed because most of the parts were difficult to see because they were happening mostly inside the pallets. He also finished the Wardrobe Pallet. What’s left on Carlos’ agenda is to model the Folding Door Hardware because it’s in the cost analysis but not included in the models. This animation is shown at the end of the render so, so it should take little to no time to accomplish. Pictures below are related to this work.

ONE COMMUNITY WEEKLY UPDATE DETAILS

HIGHEST GOOD HOUSING PROGRESS

Highest Good housing, cob construction, earthbag construction, straw bale construction, earthship construction, subterranean construction, sustainable homes, eco-homesOne Community is building a better world for us all through Highest Good housing that is artistic and beautiful, more affordable, more space efficient, lasts longer, DIY buildable, and constructed with healthy and sustainable materials:

This week the core team continued working on the “Earthbag Construction Footers, Foundation, and Flooring” review for finalizing the live page. This week we updated more images to make them more understandable, organized the remaining questions that need to be answered, answered and closed the comments we could, and made further integrations of suggestions and updates to the live page. The pictures below share some of this work.

Jose Luis Flores (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 63rd week helping finish the Net-zero Bathroom component of the Earthbag Village. This week Jose Luis continued developing the spreadsheet for the flow and pressure calculations of the Net-Zero Bathroom water storage system. The calculations are to predict what flow rates and pressures the system will have in order to install the correct pump for adequate pressure in the system. In order to gather enough constraints, he modeled a portion of the system as an electric circuit representing the flow rates as current and pressure losses as resistors. The values inputted into the resistors were based off the ratios of head losses calculated. By doing this Jose Luis was able to determine ratios between flow rates for the synthesis of constraints. Once the flow rates and pressures are calculated he will calculate the pump specifications needed. The pictures below show some of this work.

Stacey Maillet (Graphic Designer) completed her 51st and 52nd week working on the final edits and revisions to the Murphy bed instructions. These past two weeks Stacey has been finishing up implementing the comments and directions from the murphy bed instructions PDF. She submitted a draft for review in August and there have been a diversity of suggestions that she has resolved. Specifically, we were able to translate all of the remaining names of the components into the selected languages. There was also a rework of the page numbering system to include dashed/hyphen page numbers instead of using letters, and a new saw blade cutting icon added to cutting pages. There could be more changes needed in that area of the instructions. Screenshots below are related to this latest progress.

Daniela Andrea Parada (Civil Engineering Student) completed her 14th week helping with the Sustainable Roadways, Walkways, and Landscaping tutorial development, mainly focused now on the Earthbag Village components. This week she worked on the rescaling and calculations for the roadways of the site. Daniela used values obtained from David in order to start the adjustments to the excel expense sheet for the Unlimited Expense Plan. She rescaled the Roadways Minimized Expense Plan AutoCAD and measured the lengths of the roadways. From there she was able to calculate the square footage of the pathways along with the cubic yards and their overall costs. Some values for the linear footage seemed large to Daniela so she re-measured the pathways on the Unlimited Expense Plan AutoCAD. After that, she finalized scaling both AutoCAD files and created an expense plan for Earthbag Village, along with finding those measurements. Pictures below are related to this work.

Luis Manuel Dominguez (Research Engineer) completed his 22nd week helping with research related to the City Center Eco-spa designs. This week Luis focused on the final components of filtration for the City Center Spa design. Finding the proper filter required a better understanding of the spa volume and how often it needs to be recirculated. The term for this is the “turnover rate”. According to industry standards, every 8 hours of spa usage, every gallon must be run through the filter. This allowed the proper sand filter to be selected for our design and a new defining parameter for the pump was discovered. Luis realized that the pump should operate at around 35 gallons per minute in order to meet the design requirements of the filter and heating unit. Next week he will be looking at variable speed pumps that can be used to reach this target flow rate. Understanding the pump will allow the blower to be selected simultaneously. Pictures below are related to this work.

Cal Vert Wong (Software Engineer) completed his 3rd week working on the Highest Good Network software. Due to the complexity of the existing codebase, it took Cal more time to triage and locate the required code. Multiple code at different locations made it confusing and prone to creating more bugs hence he spent more time to track down which code is being called so that no new bugs are introduced when trying to resolve the current ones. Cal also reviewed a few PRs, commented on one of them to suggest a cleaner code, and made a PR himself to resolve a bug. Currently he is looking at the timer bug which can be quite challenging to be resolved. Pictures below are related to this work.

Hannah Gardner Hattersley (Software Engineer) completed her 2nd week working on the Highest Good Network software. This week, Hannah gathered necessary information to manipulate the app cron jobs and begin testing. Once she was able to begin testing, she went through and tested large groups of badges. Hannah found that most badges within a category demonstrated the same behavior (successes and bugs). Additionally, she was able to address two bugs in the HGN Beta Test Bugs document. Pictures below are related to this work.

Pranav Borole (Software Engineer) also joined the team and completed his 1st week working on the Highest Good Network software. First he spent time setting up his local environment. During the setup, he faced issues and had to debug the issue and finally solved it by seeking help from the other development team members. He then started working on High Priority Bug from the Bug Tracking Document. Pranav replicated the issue using the Dev accounts and verified the functionality and reviewed previous PRs. He found the working issue with Hours Logging solved and that the email generating issue was not possible to replicate in the Dev server. Pranav also found the incorrect due dates causing issues in the dev server and started working on a solution. Pictures of some of this work are below.

Jose Luis Flores (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 62nd week helping finish the Net-zero Bathroom component of the Earthbag Village. This week Jose Luis continued researching and developing a spreadsheet for the net-zero bathroom water storage system. The spreadsheet’s purpose is to calculate the pressure and flow rate of the system in order to determine the specific pump needed for the system and to add flexibility to the design for open source purposes. The calculations involved gathering data and graphs from a fluid mechanics documents providing sufficient data to determine losses and gains within the system. The losses include pipe bends, tees, and inlets, while the gains involve height differences. The pictures below show some of this work.

David Na (Project Management Adviser/Engineer) completed his 28th week helping with input and management of the Parking Lot and Sustainable Roadways, Walkways, and Landscaping tutorial development, now mainly focused now on the Earthbag Village aspects of this. This week David reviewed the cost analysis table that Carol and Daniela had prepared. Jae noticed that the prices were very inflated and had David check for any discrepancies. David used the kmz file One Community had regarding the project site’s location and measured the square footage and distances of the boundary lines for the location. He then compared them to the CAD file for the roadway design and noticed that the file was scaled improperly. David went and rescaled the drawing to its approximate size and saved it into dropbox so that Daniela can use the file to accurately recalculate the costs of the roadways for the entire site and for Earthbag Village Ring Road. Pictures below are related to this work.

The Compression Team consisting of Dominick Banuelos (Civil Engineering Intern), Jarot Tamba (Civil Engineering Intern), John Paul D. Matining (Civil Engineer Intern), and Marcus Nguyen (Civil Engineering Intern) completed their 12th week helping with the Aircrete and earthbag compression testing. This week, the team created a document to keep tasks for the week organized. They also completed a compression test, foam tests, addressed open comments, and consolidated information for the earthbag mixture. They added data to the spreadsheet from the multiple jar tests that were previously done but deemed unusable, because the clay content wasn’t able to be determined. They also detailed the steps to do future jar tests. A compression test was completed on one of the test quikrete cylinders. Foam generation was tested, because this may be why previous batches of aircrete collapsed. They made foam using three different soaps to help determine which soap could serve as the best foaming agent in order to make a successful cylinder batch of aircrete. The team also created a cylinder count log to see how many additional cylinders need to be ordered. Pictures below are related to this work.

And Tiffany Gao (Sustainability Researcher) completed her 9th week as a researcher, reviewer, and web developer. This week Tiffany finished up her basic proposal of a potential community-scale solution to non recyclables. She also discovered co-processing, a process used by cement production that can cleanly utilize mixed plastics as fuel and actually reduce CO2 emissions within cement factories. Tiffany sees potential in this solution and is looking into how to adapt such systems to focus on non recyclable waste management rather than an alternative of cement-making fuel. The pictures below share some of this developing work.

Luis Manuel Dominguez (Research Engineer) completed his 21st week helping with research related to the City Center Eco-spa designs. This week, after reviewing with the team, it was determined that a sand filtration system would be a more sustainable solution for the spa’s design. This option produces less waste than the other filtration systems and the sand type can be modified for finer filtration. After selecting the filtration system, the pump can now be selected because each filtration method requires different flow rate and horsepower requirements. Luis is now looking for a power-efficient option suited for a sand system. The pump also has to be designed for backwashing, a method used to remove clogged debris from the filtration system. The search for the perfect pump continues and will be complete in the coming weeks. It was also discovered that common practice is to use a submersible pump to assist with draining the spa for cleaning. An updated schematic will also be available soon in order to understand the flow of water and the electrical circuitry. Pictures below are related to this work.

Andrew Wilbert Vidianto (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 9th week working on the Duplicable City Center connectors we’ll use to build the domes. This week Andrew re-examined the final hole size for the bracket with George. At first, Andrew planned on using screws instead of bolts for connecting the bracket. However, after discussing things with George, the team chose bolts instead of screws for the connector due to the simplicity that it offers for the final design. Hole sizes of 0.25″ and 0.109″ was the most common hole that was found for joist hangers. Pictures below are related to this work.

Jose Luis Flores (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 61st week helping finish the Net-zero Bathroom component of the Earthbag Village. This week Jose Luis began working on a flow rate analysis of the water storage system of the Net-Zero Bathroom. The flow rate analysis is being conducted to ensure that there is sufficient flow rate and pressure in the water storage system for proper use. He began by first measuring the pipes and bends and making flow diagrams. A spreadsheet was constructed with all the necessary labeling and diagrams to comprehend the flow rate and pressure of the system. The analysis will take into account the losses from the bends and tees attached to ensure a fully functioning water storage system. The pictures below show some of this work.

David Na (Project Management Adviser/Engineer) completed his 27th week helping with input and management of the Parking Lot and Sustainable Roadways, Walkways, and Landscaping tutorial development, now mainly focused now on the Earthbag Village aspects of this. This week, David emailed Daniela with the week’s action items and also provided redlines to her drawings for edits to make for the Earthbag Village drainage plan. The redlines made were for a preliminary sketch and pipe network system layout for the village design. He also did some research for gravel roads and their relationship with ADA compliance. David is thinking if the proposed gravel road doesn’t not meet the requirements set by the city, we will utilize a portion of the road for gravelpave2 (an ADA compliant structural grid system that uses gravel for drainage purposes) in order to achieve ADA compliance. Pictures below are related to this work.

Daniela Andrea Parada (Civil Engineering Student) completed her 14th week helping with the Sustainable Roadways, Walkways, and Landscaping tutorial development, mainly focused now on the Earthbag Village components. This week, Daniela continued working on the drainage plan for the Earthbag Village. She included new aspects to the design such as a subsurface perforated pipe for overflow, also cleanouts and flow arrows. Labels were placed to clearly indicate where catch basins and other features are located. A legend was also included for better visualizations. Daniela then revised the excel sheet calculations for the roadway unlimited expense plan and the roadway minimized expense plan. Some values were found to be too large, so once adjusted, the overall costs were reasonable. Lastly Daniela transferred her finalized paragraphs on the Earthbag Village roadway to the Roadways, Walkways, Gutters, and Parking Lot Report. The pictures below share some of this developing work.

Luis Manuel Dominguez (Research Engineer) completed his 20th week helping with research related to the City Center Eco-spa designs. This week Luis focused on the filtration systems compatibility with the pump design and the criteria that has to be consistent in order to have a functioning cycle. The main variables are the flow rate, pump size and filter type when deciding the components of the system. The team is collaborating on which filter would work the best for our sustainable system and that will allow further progress of the spa’s design. The filter is also a fluid system dependent upon the pump, which is also the reason that the pump needs to be based on the filtration type. Pictures below are related to this work.

ONE COMMUNITY WEEKLY UPDATE DETAILS

HIGHEST GOOD HOUSING PROGRESS

Highest Good housing, cob construction, earthbag construction, straw bale construction, earthship construction, subterranean construction, sustainable homes, eco-homesOne Community is creating regenerative living models through Highest Good housing that is artistic and beautiful, more affordable, more space efficient, lasts longer, DIY buildable, and constructed with healthy and sustainable materials:

This week the core team continued what we hope will be the final review of the Murphy bed assembly instructions. We finished recreating the Murphy bed in SketchUp 3D, assembling it using the latest version of the instructions. This included completing the assembly of panels on the back, front, both sides and the overhead section. Pictures below are related to this work.

The core team also reviewed the research the Aircrete and earthbag compression testing team did on aircrete and pulled out key takeaways and what to try next to prevent the aircrete from collapsing. We made a detailed plan for the week for the students to carry out. We additionally reviewed work being completed by the city center dome connector team in preparation for integrating another team member and continued to work on the solar microgrid energy demand work – responding to comments and beginning to review the first draft of the open source tutorial we’re creating.

The core team additionally continued working on the “Earthbag Construction Footers, Foundation, and Flooring” review for finalizing the live page. The focus this week was the flooring and the wing insulation. We researched to make sure the rockwool insulation sheets could bear the weight of the slab and the earth, confirming the manufacturer explicitly says it does. We found that a respirator is needed when working with this material as a safety measure and started considering a simplification on the design to eliminate the need for metal flashing for the dome floor. Pros and cons of this are still being considered. The pictures below share some of this work.

Jose Luis Flores (Mechanical Engineer) completed his 60th week helping finish the Net-zero Bathroom component of the Earthbag Village. This week Jose Luis began organizing the part documents of the Net-Zero Bathroom SolidWorks rendering. He did this by isolating the parts into a specific folder and made sure to eliminate any errors in the referencing of SolidWorks. The process involved opening the assembled document multiple times, every time a part was moved, to be sure the program was referencing the correct parts. This was done to ensure easier access and simplify troubleshooting errors that occur when an assembly has a large number of parts. He double checked the AutoCAD document in DropBox to make sure it was the latest version. Lastly Jose added some finishing touches to the updated exterior roof by rendering roof flash and fasteners, securing and sealing the design. He also wrote action items for volunteer positions we’d like to fill and that he will be managing. The pictures below show some of this work.

Stacey Maillet (Graphic Designer) completed her 50th week working on the final edits and revisions to the Murphy bed instructions. Stacey worked this week on integrating more updates and comments from two members of the Core Team. This involves going through them one by one and then circling back repeatedly to consider symbols and labels, etc. There are also some mistakes that were made early on with regards to exactly what position boards were placed in and how they fit together. Now that we can take an overview, we are catching and fixing those. Screenshots below are related to this latest progress.

The Compression Team consisting of Dominick Banuelos (Civil Engineering Intern)Jarot Tamba (Civil Engineering Intern)John Paul D. Matining (Civil Engineer Intern), and Marcus Nguyen (Civil Engineering Intern) completed their 10th week helping with the Aircrete and earthbag compression testing. This week the team worked on more testing with the 7th Generation dish soap to see what may be causing the shrinkage with the cylinders. The week brought on some difficulty with obtaining lab time but even with the limited time availability the group was able to conduct some new tests. While doing them, it was noticed that the bubbles shrunk more with the soap by itself. Some glycerin was then added in to see the difference. With the glycerin added, the bubbles stuck together more and did not really shrink. Tests included: 16oz 7th gen with 5 gallons water, 16oz 7th gen with 2 tablespoons glycerin, 25 ounce 7th gen with 5 gallons water, and 25 oz 7th gen with 2 tablespoons glycerin. All samples seem to have collapsed in under an hour, but the ones with glycerin seemed to have a slightly better structure to their foam. Understanding this will be helpful and some more testing with other soaps will be conducted the following week. The team also redid and will redo again the jar test. Pictures below are related to this work.

Cameron White (Software Engineer) completed his 5th week working on the Highest Good Network software. This week, Cameron continued fixing the handful of bugs left on the bug list resulting in about a dozen pull requests. As part of the bug fixing process, he started rewriting the UserProfile component due to the technical debt it has accumulated. He also had discussions with Jae about how to set up the highestgood.com domain and the available security certificate options for the domain. Additionally, Cameron started working on migrating the current Highest Good Network app’s front end from Surge.sh to Azure because of the security certificate limitations of Surge. See the related pictures below of this work.

This week Aleksandra focused on working on business ethics posters. She tried to find good business practices to make it more positive. She also searched for images that would represent companies and connect them with environmental issues. Alex also fixed posters from the previous week and created additional environmental posters. You can see some samples of these below.

For his 1st week Cal focused on getting familiar with the codebases and looking at the unattended bugs from the bugs list. He began work on a bug which requires an Admin-editable end date in the volunteering tab. This bug should also auto-supply the end date based on when a person was last made inactive.
